528,503. Motor bonnet fastenings. SLEIGH, H. L., CHESTON, A. S., and BOOTH, J. H. May 20, 1939, No. 15058. [Class 44] A fastening, particularly for the bonnet panel 10 of a motor vehicle comprises a resilient rod 11 anchored at 15 and movable into engagement with a cooperating member by means of a cam or eccentric, which distorts the rod when in engagement so that the parts to be fastened are held together tightly by resilience of the rod. As shown, a cam 16 moves the rod to fastening position in which its free end 13 engages a hook or staple 17 mounted on the chassis 18. The rod is anchored at 15 under a lug on an attachment plate 14 secured to panel 10 by screws 25, the rod being guided and the cam rotatably mounted between the plate 14 and a bridge-piece 20 having flanges 21 riveted or welded to plate 14. As shown, end 13 is in released position. Anticlockwise rotation of the cam raises the rod so that the end 13 resiliently bears against the upper limb of member 17. The cam is retained in fastening position by the the rod riding on to flats 23, and its rotation may be effected by a handle, not shown, or by a key inserted in a non-circular hole 24 in the cam boss 19, the end of which is exposed through panel 10. Preferably, the boss is rotatable in a bearing sleeve, not shown, mounted on the panel, and provided with a movable cover-plate over hole 24. A more compact modification is described in which the rod is of U-form. The end of the rod may be of hook or other suitable form or instead of engaging directly it may carry a member adapted for engagement.
