Abstract

470,358. Latch handles. LEGGE, J. E., and WILSON, A. H. March 17, 1936, No. 7941. [Class 44] A supplementary spring device for the handle of a door latch comprises a frame 5 with a spring 6 disposed therein having one end secured to the frame and the other end secured to a member situated within the frame and mounted on the handle spindle 8. This member consists of a disc 7 with a square-apertured hub 7a fitting the spindle 8 and in addition the disc has an upturned peripheral lug 7b which abuts the fixed end 6a of the spring to act as a stop for the handle. In assembling the latch and handle, the hub aperture of the disc 7 can easily be lined up since it is yieldingly carried by the spring 6. The frame 5 is formed by two semicircular straps riveted together by offset ends 5a, one pair of ends also securing the end 6a of the spring. The frame 5 is shown housed in a recess drilled in the door and having notches 9b to receive the offset ends 5a, but the frame may instead be fixed on the usual rose plate.
