Abstract

542,028. Fastenings. JOYNT, J. C., and HIGGS, G. W. April 17, 1940, No. 6932. [Class 44] In a fastening for aeroplane cowlings and like uses, a stud A rotatably carried by the cowling A<1> has mutilated or segmental screw threads or ribs adapted to engage with corresponding segmental threads or ribs. in a socket B fixedly mounted on the supporting structure B'. The stud is inserted to the requisite extent and then rotated through 90 degrees to effect engagement this rotation also giving a tightening action when screw. threads are used. The stud is held against accidental release by a cross bar 6 slidable in slots 7 in socket B and engaging a transverse notch in the end of the stud under action of a compression spring 4. The stud shown is rotated by screwdriver or other implement inserted in a crossslot in the stud head, and release of member 6 is automatically affected on application of the implement by means of a plunger 9 slidable on a bore in the stud, the upper end normally projecting into the cross-slot when its lower end bears against bar 6. When the cowling &c. is detached, the stud is held against accidental rotation from the position in which it can be entered into the socket by a U-spring 11 embracing a fixed thimble 10 and projecting through slots therein into engagement with flats on the stud. The attachment flange of the thimble may have index marks such as depressions or projections A' to indicate, in conjunction with the cross-slot in the stud head, whether the stud is in locked or unlocked position. The head of the stud may project above the flange of the thimble as in full lines Fig. 1 or may lie flush in a cupped part C of the thimble as shown dotted. A modification is described in which the stud is detachable and the outer end of the plunger lies within the bore so that it can only be operated by the use of a specially shaped key passed through a corresponding keyhole in the stud head and also used for rotating the stud.
