Abstract

605,951. Securing furniture to floors. WARREN McARTHUR CORPORATION. June 26, 1945, No. 16257. Convention date, Sept. 15, 1944. [Class 52(ii)] [Also in Group XXV] A locking device for removably fastening a chair &c. to a floor or wall, of the kind in which a locking element of non- circular cross-section is inserted in a housing through a similar shaped opening and then rotated to prevent withdrawal, has a closure for the opening and means for normally and yieldingly maintaining the closure in said opening. The device consists of two units 13, 25, the unit 13 being fastened to the floor by screws and comprising a hollow base 14 with a radial flange 15 and a removable lock plate 17. A hexagonal closure 21 is held by a spring 23 in a hexagonal opening 20 in the lock plate, bars 22 on the closure riding in vertical grooves 16. The unit 25 comprises a housing 26 over which a chair leg is riveted and which has a recess into which is inserted a member 40. This member is rotatably mounted on a sleeve 37 having a flange 38 fitting tightly in a recess 31 in the housing and has an arm 42 projecting through a groove in the housing and a hexagonal locking element 44. It also has a spring compartment 45 in which is a spiral spring 50 attached at one end to the member 40 and at its other end to the sleeve 37. The member and its associated parts are secured to the housing by a bolt 52 passing through the sleeve 37 into a compartment 25 in the housing and a washer and nut 55. The arrangement of the spring 50 is such that the locking element 44 is not normally in registering alignment with the opening 20. The lever 42 may be rotated to the limit allowed by the groove in the housing 26 through which it projects (30 degrees), thus rotating the member 40 against the spring 50 and bringing the element 44 into alignment with the opening 20. The element may then be moved through the opening, pressing down the closure. Upon releasing the lever, the locking element will rotate so that it can not be withdrawn until the lever is again actuated. Other non- circular shapes for the opening 20, closure 21 and locking element 44 are shown.
