Abstract

879,917. Actuating mechanisms for door fastenings. WILMOT-BREEDEN Ltd. June 20, 1960 [July 9, 1959], No. 23588/59. Class 44. An actuating mechanism for a vehicle door fastening operable manually from inside the vehicle, comprises a body part 10 adapted to be mounted on the door and an operating lever 13 which is piovtally mounted on the body part and which is adapted to be connected by linkage to the door fastening, the operating lever having an abutment 15 and the mechanism being provided with resilient means such as a coil spring 16 which is deformable by the abutment when the operating lever is pivoted in one direction to release the door fastening, the spring acting to urge the operating lever back towards its initial position, there being also provided a locking lever 19 which is pivotally mounted on the body part, the locking lever and operating lever being adapted to coact with each other when the operating lever is pivoted in a direction opposite to the first direction, in order to retain the operating lever in a locked position to lock the door fastening, the locking lever being resiliently urged into engagement with the operating lever in the locked position of the latter. The lever 13 is mounted on a spindle 14 which projects through the body part and one end of which has mounted thereon a handle. The body part 10 is formed from two plates 11, 12 secured together and providing a space between them from which projects one end of the lever 13 and in which is disposed the spring 16 and the locking lever 19; the spring is somewhat greater in diameter than the distance between the plates 11, 12 and recesses or apertures are provided in the plates to accommodate the spring, each end of the latter being provided with a stud 18. The locking lever 19 has a projection 21 for engaging a recess 22 in the operating lever 13 to retain the latter in its locked position, rotation of the operating lever to that position having a cam-like action on the locking lever, such action causing an end 20 of the locking lever to compress the spring 16. Alternatively, the locking lever may have a recess for engagement by a projection on the operating lever. The body part and the operating lever may each be formed to U-shape from a single piece of metal. According to the Provisional Specification the two plates 11, 12 may have flanges which are bolted together, the spindle 14 may be provided with splines for engaging like splines on the handle and, in the case of the body part and operating lever being each formed to U-shape, the spindle may be secured to the body part and extend through aligned apertures in the operating lever, one of the apertures being formed around its periphery with teeth for engaging like teeth on the handle.
