Abstract
901,539. Door fastenings. WILMOT. BREEDEN Ltd. June 20, 1960 [July 9, 1959], No. 23587/59. Class 44. An actuating mechanism for a vehicle door fastening, comprises a body part 10 adapted to be mounted on the door and an operating lever 14 which is pivotally mounted on the body part and which is adapted to be connected by linkage to the fastening, the operating lever having at one end a pair of spaced, opposed abutments 15, there being also provided a helical compression spring 16 which is disposed between the abutments and is arranged to be deformed by one of the latter when the operating lever is pivoted from a central position, the arrangement being such that the spring acts to apply a restoring force to urge the operating lever back to its central position. The lever 14 is mounted on one end of a spindle 18 which projects through one side of the body part and the other end of which receives a handle operable from inside the vehicle, the handle being rotatable in either direction to release the door fastening. Alternatively, a stop may be provided, e.g. by bending over an ear from the body part, so that the handle can be rotated in only one direction. The body part 10 is formed from a pair of plates 12, 13 secured together and providing a space between them into which projects the lever 14 and in which is disposed the spring 16 ; the spring is slightly greater in diameter than the distance between the plates 12, 13 and recesses or apertures are provided in the plates to accommodate the spring, each end of the latter being provided with a stud 17. In a second embodiment, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), the body part and the operating lever are each formed to U-shape from a single piece of metal. The spindle is secured to the body part and extends through a pair of aligned apertures in the operating lever, one of the apertures being formed around its periphery with teeth for engaging like teeth on the handle. According to the Provisional Specification, the studs 17 may be dispensed with and the spindle 18 may be formed with a series of splines for engaging a correspondingly formed boss on the handle.
