Abstract

737,495. Door handles. DRYAD METAL WORKS, Ltd. Nov. 5, 1953 [Feb. 13, 1953], No. 4115/53. Class 44. A door handle mechanism comprises, when assembled on a door 13, a pair of handles 2, 3, one at each side of the door, mounted on a common bolt or latch operating spindle 1, a rose 11, 23 around the spindle between each handle and the door, and a mounting plate 5 applied to, and secured flat against one side of the door and having the spindle screw-threaded therethrough, the rose 23 at this side of the door being secured to and against the mounting plate but not directly to the door. The mounting plate 5 is fixed to the door by wood screws 7 and has a screw-threaded central aperture into which the spindle 1 is threaded. The spindle is of square section with the screw-threads formed at its corners only, over part of its length. The threaded end is slidably but non-rotatably received in a square recess 27 in the handle 2 and the other end of the spindle is a force-fit in a recess in the handle 3. Each handle has a boss 12 on which respectively the roses 11, 23 are rotatably mounted, the rose 11 for the handle 3 being secured to the door by wood screws 15. The rose 23 for the handle 2 covers the mounting plate 5 and is fixed to it by screws 24 which engage threaded holes in the mounting plate. Each boss 12 also carries a disc 16 which is fixed so as to rotate with the handle and which has cut away portions (not shown) co-operating with stops on the rose (not shown) to limit the rotation of the handle. Each handle has a tension spring 20 housed in a recess to return the handle to its initial position. The mounting plate 5 is provided with a plurality of holes for the screws 7 and 24 so that the handle 2 can be mounted on the door in alternative positions. In use when the handles are rotated the spindle moves slightly transversely of the door due to its threaded engagement with the plate 5 and sufficient play is left in the mounting of the rose 11 in its boss to allow for this.
