526,479. Stuffing box substitutes. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION CO.. March 17, 1939, No. 8543. Convention date, March 21, 1938. [Class 122 (v)] A fluid seal 30 for a rotary shaft 22 is made of rubber or like material and consists of two spaced annular flanges 34 and 36, extending inwardly from the respective ends of a central sleeve portion 32. The flange 34 grips the shaft, whilst the flange 36 which is less resilient than the other and is of somewhat larger diameter than the shaft, abuts against a sealing surface 42 formed on the housing. To prevent relative rotation between the seal and the shaft, the flange 36 may be provided with ears 38 and may also contain graphite to assist lubrication. The resilient seal is pressed against the surface 42 by a spring 46, an annular shield 48 being provided to protect the rubber if required.
