Abstract
516,087. Electric water heaters. SMITH, D. H. July 12, 1938, No. 20580. [Class 39 (iii)] [Also in Group XIII] In an electric water heater having two water containers 4, 11, one within the other, the inner container 11 is provided with electrodes 10 supported by a porcelain plate 7. The inlet consists of a nozzle 23 directed into a restricted tube 22 providing a pressure enabling the water to enter the container 11. A draining outlet 24 allows the water to flow back into the container 4 when the supply is terminated. In operation, hot water overflows through an aperture and a tube 13 to the outer container 4 where it is withdrawn through the outlet 29. To enable the heating effect to be varied the tube 13 may be adjusted at different heights by means of a wire 15 and clip 16 so that the water in the container 11 is maintained at various levels. In a modification the overflow outlet from the container 11 consists of one of a number of pipes (the others being closed by removable plugs) arranged at different levels. In a further modification water leaves the container 11 through a number of orifices at different levels in the wall, the position and size of the orifices being such that the rate of flow of water is proportional to the rate of heating.
