Abstract

510,036. Coating with metals. DAEVES, K., and BECKER, G. May 6, 1938, No. 13629. Convention date, May 11, 1937. [Class 82 (ii)] A layer of high chromium content is formed on the surface of alloys containing iron as the predominating constituent and containing more than 0.1 per cent of carbon by first decarbonizing their surfaces, e.g., by treatment with hydrogen at high temperatures, to such an extent that the carbon content at the surface is reduced to less than 0.1 per cent. and then treating with a chromium-carrier in gaseous form at a temperature above 900‹C. The gaseous chromium-carrier, which may be formed by passing gaseous hydrochloric acid over red hot chromium or alloys or compounds of chromium, is preferably caused to flow over the articles. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes also the treatment with a gaseous chromium-carrier of articles made from iron alloys containing less than 0.1 per cent. of carbon. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
