[Class 82 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXIV] A running surface is formed on iron or steel bearings by introducing chromium into the surface by diffusion from a chromium-containing gas. The gas is preferably a chlorine compound of chromium obtained, for example, either by gasifying a solid chromium chlorine compound or by passing gaseous hydrochloric acid over a red hot chromium compound, e.g., ferrochromium. The gas is caused to act on the running surface of the bearing at a temperature between 900 and 1100‹C., preferably by producing a continuous flow of the gas over the heated surface.
