Modifying chemical characters of metals. - Gaseous combustion products containing carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and/or free oxygen for use in decarburizing iron castings or other metal castings containing carbon, such as molybdenum, uranium, chromium and vanadium, are purified by first, passing them over a reducing agent such as heated iron turnings to eliminate free oxygen, if present, and then over an oxidizing agent, such as heated iron oxide, to convert the carbon monoxide into carbon dioxide. Specification 334,434 is referred to.
