Abstract
A process of manufacturing chromium-containing steel, having a maximum carbon content of 0.04 per cent, which comprises forming a bath of molten steel containing chromium, oxidizing the bath to remove carbon, thus forming a slag containing chromium and iron oxides, and adding a ferrochromesilicon reducing agent to recover chromium and iron from the slag, is characterized in that the reducing agent has the following composition: Cr 50-70 per cent; Si 5-15 per cent; C 0.01-0.15 per cent; Fe the remainder. The reducing agent may be added in amount between 75 and 95 per cent of that required theoretically to reduce all the chromium and iron oxides in the slag, other silicon-bearing alloys being used to complete the reduction.
