Abstract
Steel scrap containing more than 17% Cr, or Cr and Ni, or Cr, Ni and Mo is melted and decarburized to produce an end product having 0À03% C or less by first melting it in an arc furnace where the melt is adjusted to the metallic composition desired and any Al, Ti and Si removed by addition of a stoichiometric amount of oxygen or metal oxide, and then transferring the melt to a vacuum induction furnace where decarburization is effected by the addition of oxygen or an oxide such as Fe, Mn or Ni oxide.
