Abstract
1508592 Producing steels and ferrous alloys I G NIXON 18 Feb 1975 [26 Feb 1974] 37899/77 Divided out of 1508591 Heading C7D Steel, alloy steels or ferrous alloys are produced by charging steel, scrap, Fe sponge, cast iron or a mixture to a converter, e.g. an electric converter, together with a ferroalloy and a flux and refining the melt with H 2 , an inert gas, a decarburizing gas which is reducing to wustite at the refining temperature, or a mixture thereof, additions being made before and/or during refining of a least one metal oxide. The oxide is preferably of Fe, Cr, Ni, W, Mo, Ti, Nb or Cu and may be roasted ore, ore concentrate, oxidic ore, preferably added as a briquette. Sponge iron may be used, but where the oxide is an iron oxide it is added only during refining, e.g. as a continuous stream. The decarburizing gas is a mixture of CO/CO 2 /H 2 /H 2 O, and, optionally, N 2 .
