Abstract
A furnacing process for the production of ferrochromium alloys comprises smelting chromium ore with an iron-chromium-silicon alloy without addition of lime to form the ferrochromium alloy and a substantially neutral chromium-containing slag in which the chromium to iron ratio is at least 4:1, and treating the slag with a carbonaceous reducing agent and silica, and, if required, with chromium ore, to produce an iron-chromium-silicon alloy for recycling to the furnacing process. Iron-chromium-silicon alloys containing 30-50% Si, 15-30% Si or 2-15% Si may be used to produce low-carbon (less than 0.5%C), medium carbon (.5-4%C) and high carbon (over 4%C) ferro chromium alloys respectively. The smelting operation may take place in a furnace having a chromium ore lining.
