Cementation.-In a process for decarbonizing iron or other metals containing carbon, such as chromium, molybdenum, uranium and vanadium, by carbon dioxide, the materials are heated and treated in the presence of one or more metallic oxides capable of transforming the carbon monoxide formed during the decarbonizing process into carbon dioxide. The oxides, which may be tin, zinc, or ferric oxides, may be mixed with inert materials such as silica., alumina or lime, and the carbon dioxide may be chemically pure or mixed with inert gases such as nitrogen.
