Abstract
518,570. Alloys. STERN, H. June 30, 1938, No. 19381. [Class 82 (i)] Alloy steel scrap containing one or more of the metals chromium, molybdenum, tungsten, and vanadium, with or without nickel, is treated to obtain on the one hand an iron alloy containing the nickel, if present, but free from or low in the other metals, and on the other hand a product free from or low in nickel but containing oxides of the other metals, by treating the molten alloy with oxygen or oxides or both in the presence of acid substances such as silica or of bases such as lime or sodium carbonate. The process is applicable, for example, to austenitic stainless steel scrap, and may be carried out in a converter, or in a low-frequency or twofrequency induction furnace. The slags obtained may be utilized for the production of alloys such as ferro-chrome-silicon, or of chromates or chromic acid.
