Abstract

A process for the recovery of metals or metal compounds from complex oxide ores containing oxides both of iron and of another metal such as chromium, tungsten, vanadium, molybdenum, or titanium, comprises heating the ore in comminuted form under oxidizing conditions, the degree of comminution, the temperature and the oxidizing conditions being so controlled as to cause the bond between the constituents of the ore to be destroyed, reducing the product, for example by hydrogen, so as to reduce the iron oxide but not the oxide of the other metal, and separating the iron thus reduced. The ore is oxidized in a stream of oxygen or oxygen-containing gas.
