Abstract
An alloy containing tantalum and niobium, which may be an iron-tantalum-niobium alloy formed by smelting material containing oxides of tantalum and niobium, is melted and treated with oxides or oxidized compounds of metals such as niobium, iron, manganese, chromium, nickel, and cobalt, capable of displacing the tantalum selectively to the niobium, whereby there is obtained a niobium alloy and a slag containing the tantalum. The tantalum product may be treated subsequently for the recovery of the tantalum in the form of metal, alloy, carbide or oxide.ALSO:An alloy containing tantalum and niobium, which may be an iron-tantalum-niobium alloy formed by smelting material containing oxides of tantalum and niobium, is melted and treated with oxides or oxidized compounds of metals such as niobium, iron, manganese, chromium, nickel, and cobalt, capable of displacing the tantalum selectively to the niobium, whereby there is obtained a niobium alloy and a slag containing the tantalum. The tantalum product may be treated subsequently for the recovery of the tantalum in the form of metal, alloy, carbide, or oxide.
