Abstract
509,498. Sharpening knives &c. confining dust &c. on generation. EWART, R. D. Dec. 15, 1937, No. 34691. [Class 60] [Also in Group XXVIII] A machine for sharpening knives &c., comprises a casing 1 having journalled therein two shafts 2, 3 carrying grinding-wheels 4, 5, and driven by a belt from a pulley 10 on the shaft 7 of an electric motor 6 mounted in the casing 1, the belt being tensioned by an adjustable pulley 12 carried by a pin 13. The wheels 4, 5 are staggered and overlap to form a V for receiving the knife edge, and are enclosed by a casing section 19 attached to the casing 1, dust being drawn from the casing 19 by a fan &c. 20, carried by the shaft 7 and arranged in a casing 21 leading, through a conduit 22, to an air-filter bag 23. The knife is kept upright in the V by means of two guide slots, which may be formed in the section 19 and the casing 1 or, as shown, as slots 30 in plate members 26 secured to members 28 which bear slidably on a facing 29 on the top of the section 19 and of the casing 1. The members 28 have tail-pieces 31 held in position by screws 32 passing through slots in the pieces 31, so that the knife guide may slide to adjust itself to the position of the knife or may be clamped in position.
