Abstract

543,094. Sharpening knives. RENFREW, A. R. Aug. 5, 1940, No. 12599. [Class 60] In a knife sharpening machine having a mechanically driven grinding-wheel and a guide slot to guide the knife, the wheel is peripherally driven by an electric motor and is arranged with its axis angularly disposed in a horizontal plane relatively to the guide ; the knife being sharpened on one side to form a chisel edge. The motor-driven spindle carries a gravitywheel 8 at one end, enclosed in the guide 9, 10, and a polishing mop 7 at the other. The spindle is mounted at an angle, as shown in Fig. 2, adjustable by screws and arcuate slots that clamp the motor to the base. The projection of the wheel relatively to the guide is varied by adjusting the base laterally in the casing 1. The guide comprises a fixed part 9 and a part 10 inter-changeable to vary the width of slot 13, the slot being at an angle to the wheel as shown in Fig. 1. The edges of the guide slot are gapped to pass the hilt of the knife and permit the full length of blade to be ground. The knife is held firmly against a leather facing 14. The face of the wheel is coned to engage the blade on one side only, and the periphery is grooved at 19, Fig. 9 to cause air circulation for blowing away dust. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 534,234.
