[Class 5 (i).] An apparatus for cutting tobacco leaves comprises cutting knives built into a pneumatic conveying conduit. A suction fan connected to the pipe 1 draws tobacco leaves through the pipe 3, between cutting discs 6 and guiding discs 10 and through a separator mounted in the pipe 1. The discs 6, 10 are spaced apart by intermediate discs 8, all the discs being changeable to vary the width of the slices. The discs 6 are ground upon their peripheries by a grinding roller 12 which is reciprocated longitudinally and mechanically fed towards the shaft 7 ; the discs 10 may also be ground by a similar grinding roller. The degree of suction is regulated by a throttle flap 11 in the pipe 2 ; guiding devices may be used to prevent uncut tobacco passing directly to the pipe 1. The knives may be in the form of circular discs, as shown, sickle- or segmentalshaped discs, or band-knives, and may rotate or reciprocate. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes grinding devices in the form of discs arranged on a shaft parallel to the shaft 7, such discs contacting with the faces of the discs 6, and also states that the discs 10 may act as sharpening devices. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
