Abstract
261,151. Podmore, A. Sept. 29, 1925. Cigarette-making machines.-In cutoff mechanism for cigarette machines of the type comprising an eccentrically edged knife 4 rotating about an axis parallel to and fixed relatively to the axis of the cigarette rod, the knife 4 is clamped between discs 5 on a splined sleeve 8 mounted on a splined shaft 9 which rotates in fixed bearings parallel to the tube 10 through which the tobacco rod passes. The shaft 9 is driven from a main shaft through bevel gearing, a shaft 13, and pinions 11, 12. The sleeve 8 is reciprocated on the shaft 9 by means of rods 18 connected to eccentrics 19 on a shaft 20 driven by a bevel wheel 21 on the shaft 9, so that the cutter is moving with the cigarette rod when the put is effected. By suitably adjusting the speed of the shaft 9, two or more cutting blades may be employed. In a modification, the splines on the shaft 9 and sleeve S are curved in order to give an increased speed at the moment of cutting and a retardation while the knife is being sharpened by a member 24 on an oscillating arm 25.
