[Class 5 (i)] [See also Group XXIII] A tobacco-cutting machine comprises a mouthpiece R towards which tobacco is urged by conveyers C, H and compression rollers G, J1, J2, J3, a revolving cutter having a knife or knives with spiral cutting edge 5 which is, as the cutter revolves, advanced across the mouthpiece R, a means for sharpening the knife during rotation and means for adjusting the cutter in relation to the mouthpiece to compensate for the wear of the knife. The knife may consist of a strip, in the form of a spiral, held between two disc-shaped plates 7, 8, or of two strips each of spiral shape. Each blade is formed with such minimum and maximum radius as will give a " throw ' slightly greater than the normal depth of the mouthpiece R, the maximum radius being continued over a definite angle to allow for the result of continued sharpening. The cutter is mounted on a shaft 9 mounted in bearings in a housing 17, movable longitudinally by means of a screw 20 continuously driven by the main driving means. At a point diametrically opposite to the mouthpiece a knife grinding wheel 24 of cup-form is mounted on a shaft 25 arranged so as to be slidable to take up wear of grinder. The knife edge passes continuously over the sharpening wheel 24, and the grinding wheel is dressed by means of a diamond 27 on an arm 30 rotated by a shaft 28. The grinding wheel is advanced automatically by a screw feed operated by a ratchet wheel driven from a cam on the end of shaft 28. A suction fan 49 withdraws particles of steel and grinding material into an appropriate dust collector. Provision is made for revolving the knife independent of the feed. The mouthpiece R has a fixed lower edge 1, the upper edge 2 being movable and attached to hinged side frames carrying also the pressure rollers J1, J2, J3.
