[Class 130] [Also in Group VIII] A mechanism for severing an axially moving cigarette or other rod into lengths comprises a knife 5, mounted on a carrier 31 connected to a pivoted member 12 mounted to sweep out a conical surface of revolution, whereby the knife is caused to traverse an elliptical or circular orbit, and means for maintaining the knife in parallel planes at all times, for example in planes normal to the axis of the moving rod. As shown, a circular knife 5 is mounted on a spindle 6 rotatable in bearings 7 on a bracket 8 bolted to the carrier 31, the spindle 6 being driven by a belt 23. The carrier 31 forms one link of a parallel-link mechanism comprising links 11, 12 pivoted upon a shaft 15 journalled for oscillation in a fixed bearing 16. The shaft 15 and spindle 6 lie parallel to the direction of movement of the cigarette rod, which passes through a ledger tube 35. In order to give a conical movement to the link 12, an extension 18 of the link is rotatable in bearings in a block 26 adjustably mounted in a part-spherical disc 19 on a shaft 20 driven through gearing 33, 34. The knife 5 may be sickle-shaped, and an abrasive other cutter may be substituted when used for purposes other than cutting cigarette rods.
