Machine cutters, grinding in situ.-The eccentric edge of the rotating knife of a cigarette rod cutting apparatus is sharpened by a grinding-disc mounted on a rotating carrier. The knife carrier 1. carrying the eccentric-edged blade 2, is pivotally mounted at 4 on a shaft 6 driven through bevel gearing 8 and worm gearing 11 from a shaft 13; by adjustment of the pivot, the knife is moved obliquely to follow the longitudinal movement of the rod. The grinding-disc 14 is freely rotatable in a bracket 17, angularly adjustable at 19 on a hub 20, which is slidably, but non- rotatably, carried by a shaft 21, driven in the same direction, and at the same speed as the knife by gearing from the shaft 13, so that at each revolution the disc passes across the knife-edge. The hub is adjustable axially on the shaft 21 by a fork 26 carried by a rod 27 having a a screwed part 28 engaged by a nut 29. When the knife is movable obliquely, the carrier for the grinding-disc is made in several parts, adjustable to allow the disc to follow the movements of the knife. The shafts 6, 21 and their driving gear are mounted in a common casing 24.
