Abstract

178,913. Smith, G. A., and Carter, A. E. Jan. 21, 1921. Machine cutters, grinding in situ.-The rotary knife a of a machine for slicing bacon, bread, and meat is sharpened by a bevelled grinding-disc 6. The disc is mounted on a spindle 5 which is rotatably carried by a screwed sleeve 4 and has at its end a rubber or other friction driving-wheel 7 adapted to contact with the periphery of the fly-wheel b of the machine and to be driven thereby. The sleeve 4 is adjustable axially, by means of a nut 8, in a bracket 1 pivoted at 2 to the frame c; or, alternatively, the sleeve may be adjusted by hand and locked by a set-screw. In operation, the bracket is moved about its pivot to bring the disc 6 and the wheel 7 into contact with the knife and the fly-wheel respectively, and the fly-wheel and the knife are rotated. When sharpening is completed, the bracket is swung on its pivot to move the disc and the wheel into an inoperative position. The pivot comprises a screw, which may be tightened to hold the bracket. in either position. According to the Provisional Specification, the bracket may have a handle to facilitate movement of the bracket. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 13815/03, 13995/10, 24975/10. and 144,099.
