[Class 83 (iii)] A gear-cutter of the type in which the cutting-edge of a tool is caused to remain parallel to itself during a rotary cutting movement comprises a rotatable plate carrying a number of cutting tools and a second plate, having cranks which are connected to the tools, adapted to rotate on a boss, fixed eccentrically to the first plate, in unison therewith so that the position of each tool is controlled by a deformable parallelogram. The cutters 3, one only of which is shown, are rotatably mounted in a circle around the plate 1. The latter rotates, on the shaft 2, eccentrically in the boss 4 of a worm wheel 10, the outside of the boss carrying a disc 5 into which pins 8 are rotatably fitted, these serving to rotate levers 7 which are keyed to the ends of the cutters or cutter holders. This arrangement ensures that the operative edge of the cutter moves parallel to itself when the plate 1 is rotated through the shaft 2, the levers 7 being of the same length as the eccentricity e. A worm 9 with a graduated collar is used to adjust the wheel 10 and thereby alter the position of the cutters, either for working or for grinding. The cutters may also be arranged in a spiral.
