1277221 Continuous rod cut-off AMF Inc 23 Sept 1969 [2 Oct 1968] 46787/69 Heading A2C Apparatus for severing continuous cigarette rod fed along an axis 1, Fig. 3, comprises a pair of shafts 3, 4 whose axes are parallel and offset and lies in a plane parallel to that containing the rod axis, a disc 13, 14 secured to each shaft, at least one drag link 12 interconnecting crank pins 113, 114 on the discs, and a cutter blade 16 carried by the or each drag link. In the embodiment there are three drag links interconnecting three equally spaced crank pins on each disc whereby rotation of the shaft 4 by a gear 15 is transmitted to the disc 13 and the orientation of the cutter blades remains unchanged during the rotation. The shafts are carried by a member 8 which is rotatably adjustable on a bracket 9 to vary the angle of the shafts relatively to the rod axis 1 so that the horizontal component of velocity of the blades in the cutting region can be made to correspond to the linear velocity of the rod, and the blades are angularly adjustable on the drag links so that they may be set normal to the rod axis. To compensate for reduction of the radial projection of the blades due to sharpening in use, the blades are also adjustable by a screw and nut mechanism which may be controlled automatically. When adjustment is required, a spring-loaded pneumatic or hydraulic piston (not shown) in each drag link is displaced to cause a rack 26, Fig. 4 to turn a pinion 22 which, through a one-way drive 23, turns a nut 19 coacting with a screw 18 to cause an incremental advance of the blade. A second one-way device 24 between the nut and a housing 112 prevents rotation of the nut when the piston is returned in preparation for the next adjustment increment.
