A knife-feeding device for a cigarette machine cut-off rotatable about an axis and having a sickle knife 20 comprises a knife clamp 24, 25, a nut 23 engaging the knife near its inner end and a rotatable screw 55 threaded in the nut to feed the knife outwards from the axis about which the cutoff rotates and against the friction of the clamp. The screw is driven by gearing 69, 70, 81 and 80, the gear 69 being fixed to a spindle 82 having a bevel gear wheel 56 which engages a further bevel gear wheel 57 fixed on a shaft 58. Shaft 58 is rotatable within the main drive shaft 17. Four gear wheels 59, 60, 61 and 62 are arranged as shown in Fig. 2. The gear 59 is geared to shaft 17, the wheels 60 and 61 are attached to a shaft 67 and a gear 62 is connected to shaft 58 through a clutch 65. The number of teeth on the gears is selected so that a slight angular displacement takes place between shafts 17 and 58, thus causing the knife to be fed outwardly. A Geneva stop mechanism 71, 72 is provided on the gears 69, 70, which causes the clutch 65 to break and so stop rotation of the screw 55, when the nut 23 reaches the outer end of the screw. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 5 (not shown) a helical knife blade is employed and an additional screw is provided, diametrically opposed to the screw 55 and having a weight thereon which moves outwardly with the adjustment of the block 23 to compensate for variations in the balance about the axis of rotation of the knife.
