A cigarette cut-off planetary fly knife 15 having its edge 15a concentric with the axis of rotation of the knife in its rotary carrier 10 and operatively presented. to the cigarette rod adjacent a stationary ledger tube 18, preferably at alternate revolutions of the .carrier, with its axis to the rear of the plane containing the carrier and tube axes so as to simulate the action of an eccentric-edged fly knife, is rotated via a pinion 12 from a sun gear 11 co-axial with the carrier 10, the gear 11 and carrier 10 being driven in the same direction at different rates as by helical gears 3, 2 on a driving shaft meshing gears 6, 5 on the gear and carrier shafts respectively. A counterweight 16 for the knife assembly is provided, and at one position the knife co-acts with sharpening and burring discs, Fig. 4 (not shown).
