Abstract
945,841. Cigarette-making machines. MOLINS MACHINE CO. Ltd., D W. MOLINS, and J. A. MASON. June 7, 1961 [June 8, 1960], No. 20093/60. Heading A2C. [Also in Division F2] A knife feeding device for a rotating cut-off of a cigarette machine has a frictionally gripped sickle knife that is fed outwards by the rotation of a screw in a nut, which nut has fixed to it a flexible member (e.g. a chain) attached to an abutment on the inner end of the knife. The knife 20 (Fig. 4), frictionally held between plates 24 and 25, and supported by a block 23, is drawn outwards against a pair of springs 52 by a chain 50 attached at one end to an eyebolt 29 and at the other end to a nut 54. A bevel gear 56, fixed to a screw 55, mates with another bevel gear 57 fixed to a shaft 58 which rotates within the cutter bearing shaft. By means of gearing (Fig. 5 not shown) the speeds of these two shafts are arranged to differ by a slight angular displacement per revolution, and hence turn the screw 55 at a rate proportional to the difference between these two speeds. A Geneva stop mechanism 69, 70, on the end of a shaft 68, engages when the nut 54 reaches the lower end of the screw 55 and causes an overload clutch in the gearing (Figs. 6, 9, 10 not shown) to break so stopping further rotation of the screw 55. In an alternative arrangement, the chain 50 guided around four pulleys is attached to both ends of the nut 54 and to both ends of an abutment that replaces the block 23, this abutment having a small lug that enters a slot in the inner end of the knife 20. In another embodiment, the chain 50 is passed through the centre of the cutter bearing shaft, around pulleys 37 and 38 (Fig. 2) and is fixed to a slideable plate structure 39 in which a nut 44 is held captive. A screw 43 is driven by the machine drive via gearing within the box 11, a chain 47 and sprocket wheels 46 and 48 and a reduction gear 100. Specification 324,379 is referred to.
