Description

R. J. A. CHANDLER CUT-OFF FOR CIGARETTE MACHINES Dec. 30, 1930.
Filed Sept. 18, 1929 Fig.2.
INVENTOR BY 0% TTORNEY Patented Dec. 30, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE ROBERT JOHN ALEXANDER CHANDLER, OF LONDON, ENGLAND, ASSIGNOR TO AMERI- CAN MACHINE & FOUNDRY COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY CUT-OFF FOR CIGARETTE MACHINES Application filed September 18, 1929. Serial No. 393,463.
produce a cutoff in which the moving parts notcompletely balanced are of relatively littleweight, and in which smooth rotary or harmonic motion takes the place of reciproca-.
tion, and to accompany these advantages with simplicity and cheapness of construction. To this end the cuttingblade is supported for, pivotaland rotary motion on two pivots which are given difierential'motion such that 5 the cutoif blade has very rapid yet smooth .motion across the path of the cigarette rod.
With these and other objects in View, the invention consists in certain constructions and combinations which will be hereinafter 2 fully set forth and then particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Inthe accompanying drawings inwhich likeicharacters of reference indicate the same or. like parts V .Fig. l is a front elevation of a cigarette rod cut-0E machine constructed in accordance with the invention; and
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the machine shown in Fig. 1. 1 In carrying the invention into effect there isprovided in combination witha cigarette rod guide, a cutting element, spaced pivots on which said cutting element is supported, and means for imparting differential orbital 7 movement to said pivots to produce movement of said element across the cigarette rod. In the best constructions, these pivots are mounted for movement about a common center, and preferably said means operates to revolve said pivots in opposite directions about said center. In the best constructions, said means is timed to cause maximum speed of movement near cutting position.
The various means referred to may be widely varied in construction within the scope of the claims, for the particular device selected to illustrate the invention is but one of many possible embodiments of the same. The invention, therefore, is not to be restricted to the precise details of the structure shown and described. v V
Referring to the drawings,'o rbital movement is imparted to one of the pivots or crank pins 2 on which the cutting element is carried,
by a disk 3 to the faceof which thepin is secured, which disk is fastened to a shaft 4: journaled in a bearing frame '5 on a table 6 formingpart of the frame of the cigarette machine of which this cutoif forms a part. This disk is driven by a bevel gear Son the shaft 9 driven through gear lO'from the main drive of the cigarette machine.
The crank pin 16 on which the lever 17 is pivoted at its mid-portion is revolved in a concentric path of greater radius about that of the pin 2 but in reverse direction by a disk 14 mounted on sleeve 13 in a bushing 11 in an 3111112 of the bearing frame 5, and driven by a stationary gear 15 meshing with the gear 8. The lever 17 is provided with a slot 20 embracing the pin 2, the latter being provided with a roller 19 to reduce friction.
The cutoff element consists of this light lever 17 having fastened to its outer end a narrow cutoff blade 18. blade is slightly inclined to the plane of disk 14 so as to compensate for the travel of the rod while the blade is passing through it, and this insures a out which is exactly square. The present device, however, is designed to reduce this travel to a minimum through making the blade very narrow and passing the blades through the 'rod at high speed made possible by the absence of vibration and by the additional impetus given the blade at cuttingposition the relative movement of the two pivots.
In cutting the cigarette rod, the cutoff blades cooperate in the usual manner with suitable stationary guide andv ledger tubes 21, 22 and 23. Suitable grinding disks 25 and 26' engage the blade between cuts.
As shown in Fig. 1, the driving gears of the disks 3 and 14 are'so timed that the pins 2 and 16 pass each other traveling in'opposite directionswhen approximately in alignment with their common center and the cigarette rod. As a result, the blade 18 is given in addition to its circular movement with the disk Preferably this several times that to the pin 2, when the blade is near cutting position.
It should be noted'that by the foregoing construction reciprocating parts are eliminated and that the only parts having other than purely circular motion and very high speed are light in Weight and have an annular harmonic motion which is slowest where a change of directionoccurs, thereby insurin freedom from vibration.
