Abstract

537,753. Variable-speed gearing. LEVERICK, F. Feb. 26, 1940, No. 3522. [Class 80 (ii)] In a change-speed gear, of continuously variable type, a driving toothed wheel D meshes constantly with a driven toothed wheel E, the change of gear ratio being effected by varying the centre about which the wheel D revolves. As shown, the wheel D is part of a casing Having diametrical guides C engaged by a slider B on the end of the driving shaft A. The position of the slider B in the guides C may be varied by screw-andnut gearing or other means. A driven planetary pinion E fixed on a spindle e' gears with a wheel G pivoted on a rod f co-axial with the axis of the casing D. The spindle e<1> is carried by a spider F free on the hub g of the wheel G and having internal teeth f' meshing with the teeth m of a compound gear K, M, pivoted on a plate V. The latter is held fixed in space. Gear K meshes an idler J gearing with a wheel H fixed to the wheel G. A driven shaft N, coaxial with the driving shaft A is connected with the spindle e' by a telescopic shaft n and a pair of universal joints. The wheels D, E, are equal in size to the wheels F, M, respectively, and the gear ratio of the train E to G is the same as the gear ratio of the train M, K, J, H. In operation, rotation of the shaft A produces uniform rotation of the shaft N. The speed' is varied by sliding the casing D along the slider B in a radial direction. When the position of the slider is radially beyond the pitch circle of the teeth d of the casing D reverse rotation is given to the shaft N. The plate V may be held fixed by the means shown in Figs. 5 and 6. In this case the plate V is fixed to the spindle f which is free in a bearing d<1> on the casing D. The spindle f carries a plate 10 having a rod 11 jointed to two parallel rods 12, 12, of a parallel motion device. In this case the drive is preferably taken from a toothed wheel 15 carried by the plate 10 and meshing with a wheel 14 on the wheel G.
