Abstract

878,619. Grinding. HOBSON Ltd., H. M. Aug. 18, 1959 [June 3, 1958], No. 17734/58. Addition to 829,364. Class 60. A grinding machine comprises a grinding wheel, means for rotating the grinding wheel about a stationary axis, a workpiece holder arranged to rotate about an axis parallel to and remote from that of the grinding wheel and adapted to carry a plurality of workpieces which are successively brought into position for grinding, means for positively rotating the workpieces carried by the holder and means for varying the speed of rotation of the holder so that it rotates slowly while a workpiece is being ground and fast while a fresh workpiece is being brought to grinding position. A grinding wheel 10 having a plain or profiled periphery is driven by belt 11 from electic motor 12. Workpieces 13 are supported on a drum 14 rotatably mounted on a slide 15 movable on the machine from 9 towards and away from the grinding wheel, being set before grinding commences to a position corresponding to the required depth of cut. The drum 14 is driven from electric motor 16 through epicyclic gearing including a sun wheel 17 fixed to the motor shaft 18, a pair of planet wheels 19 freely rotatably on shafts 20 fixed to the drum 14, another pair of wheels 21 fixed to the wheels 19 freely rotatable on the shafts 20 and meshing with a sun wheel 22 freely rotatable on the shaft 18 and also with outer wheels 23 for imparting rotary motion to the workpieces 13. A wormwheel 26 fixed to the wheel 22 meshes with a worm 24 adapted to be driven by an auxiliary electric motor. While a workpiece is being ground, at position B, the motor 25 is running and rotates the wheel 22 in the same direction as, but at a slower rate than, the wheel 17 and the drum 14 rotates at a slow speed. When grinding is completed a cam mechanism, (not shown), switches off the motor so that the wheel 22 is held stationary and the drum 14 rotates at a higher speed to bring a workpiece at position A to the grinding position B, whereupon the cam mechanism again switches on the motor 25 causing the drum to revert to its slower speed.
