805,318. Shearing. KOPPERS CO., Inc. Jan. 17, 1957 [Jan. 18, 1956], No. 1847/57. Class 83 (4). [Also in Group VIII] A web fed by rollers 2 is cut transversely into lengths by means of blades 4 provided on carriers 3 which are driven from a shaft 16 through gearing 28, 29 and through speedvarying means which bring the peripheral speed of the blades 4 at the instant of cut substantially equal to the speed of the web, the speedvarying means being in the form of a differential unit 26 comprising bevel gears and a ring gear 27 which is driven from one end of a crank shaft 31, driven by gearing 29, 32 from the shaft 16, through a linkage assembly including a yoke 38, a rocking arm 42 and a rack and pinion 52, 53, the torques produced as the angular velocity of the carriers 3 is varied being counterbalanced by means of two flywheels 61, 62, and the variation in the angular velocity of the carriers 3 being regulated by means of a block 46, in which the arm 42 is pivotally mounted, which is movable along a slideway 47. The flywheel 61 is mounted on the output shaft of a second differential unit 26<SP>1</SP> having a ring gear 27<SP>1</SP> and a gear 28<SP>1</SP> engaging the gear 29, and the flywheel 62 is mounted on the shaft of a pinion 53<SP>1</SP> engaging a rack 52<SP>1</SP> forming part of a second linkage assembly including a rocking arm 42<SP>1</SP> and a yoke 38<SP>1</SP> driven from the other end of the crank shaft 31, the two linkage assemblies being 90 degrees out of phase.
