Abstract
671,534. Sawing. AETNA-STANDARD ENGINEERING CO. Jan. 5, 1950 [Jan. 6, 1949], No. 311/50. Class 145 (ii). [Also in Group XXII] A cutting-off machine for operating a continuously moving stock such as rods, pipes and tubes emerging from a mill, comprises a circular saw, or circular knife, the axis of rotation of which is moved in a circular path parallel to the axis in which the work to be severed is continuously moved, and at a distance such that the cutting tool passes adjacent to the work but does not engage it. The work is fed over a cam which is so formed as periodically to deflect the work into the path of the cutting tool, thus severing the work. The speed of revolution of the work-deflecting cam and the speed of orbital movement of the cutting tool, may be varied to vary the lengths cut. The throw.of the crank arms carrying the cutting tool is varied in order that the linear speed of the saw (the chord of the cutting arc) may approximate closely to that of the work. When the throw of the crank is varied, the axis about which the crank is rotated is correspondingly varied so that the relative position of saw and work at the cutting point is unchanged. Fig. 2 .shows the work W deflected by the cam 14 and the tool 16, which is driven by an electric motor 20, and maintained parallel to the axis of the work by crank arms 24, 25 and connecting frame member 22. In Fig. 6 the variable throw crank mechanism is illustrated, and comprises screwed rods 56, 57 rotation of which in bushes 58, 59, varies the crank throw. The adjustment is made whilst the machine is running by moving the rod 70 with respect to the hollow shaft 26 and thus causing bevels 66, 67 to turn. The rod is driven at the same speed as shaft 26 but through a differential gear, the cage of which can be rotated in either direction by hand. The machine has a main electric motor (not shown) which drives both the cranks and the deflecting cam through suitable gearing and this motor is run in synchronism with the speed of the rolling mill preceding the machine.
