In a device for trimming the ridge off a welded chain-link limb for use in conjunction with means for automatically feeding the link, a saddle for supporting the unwelded limb and means for holding the link on the saddle during trimming, a trimming knife embraces the welded limb over a part of its periphery and can be thrust longitudinally along it and swung in the peripheral direction. In an embodiment a link 13, Figs. 1 and 4, is held on a saddle 10 by a pair of jaws 12 and a knife 19 mounted in a holder 18 on a member 17 and having a 180 degree edge 20 and two edges 21, 22 parallel to the limb, is moved forward, the edge 20 removing the upper part of the ridge. The member 17 is rotated through 90 degrees or a little more to the portion shown in Fig. 4 when the edge 22 removes part of the remaining ridge. The knife is swung back through 180 degrees or a little more and the edge 21 removes the remainder of the ridge. In modifications the edge 20 is replaced by two helical &c. edges meeting in arrow-form or the edges 21, 22 may be helically arranged. The knife may have only two edges, these being helical &c. and meeting in arrow form. A single-edged knife may be moved forwards to cut and is swung at the end of a return stroke, to cut again in a different angular position on the next forward stroke. An apparatus for mounting on a chain-welding machine comprises a shaft 37, Fig. 9, carrying a knife 47 similar to the knife 19. An electric motor rotates a shaft 29 carrying two cams, one of which engages a roller 32 on a lever 30 and the other of which engages a roller on a lever 39. The lever 30 carries a toothed sector, meshing through a wheel with teeth 38 on the shaft 37 to rotate it, and the lever 39 has a forked end engaging a groove 45 in the shaft 37 to reciprocate it. Rotation of the shaft 29 effects the swinging and longitudinal movements of knife 19 also.
