Abstract

696,390. Slotting-apparatus. DERITEND. ENGINEERING CO., Ltd. April 7, 1952. [April 6, 1951] No. 7982/51. Class 31 (i). In apparatus for slotting cardboard and the like for the manufacture of boxes, knives 43, 44 of each of two slotting units are carried by rotatable concentric sleeves 35, 37 respectively which are driven through gearing at the same speed, and means are provided for adjusting the rotational angular setting of the drive to one of the sleeves of each pair relative to the other whereby one knife of each pair may be adjusted angularly relative to the other knife. The knives 43, 44 of each unit co-operate with knives 45, 46 provided on rotatable concentric sleeves 40, 42 respectively. The sleeves 35, 40 are driven by means of pinions 25, 26 on a spindle 18, and the sleeves 37, 42 are driven by means of pinions 27, 28 on a spindle 19. The spindle 18 is driven from a chain wheel drive 13, Fig. 1, by means of gearing including a pinion 17 which is rotatable on the spindle 18 but is prevented from axial movement relative thereto. The spindle 19 is rotated from the spindle 18 by gearing including a pinion 23 which is rotatable on, but not movable axially relative to, the spindle 19. Each spindle 18, 19 is adjustable axially relative to a frame 6 by means of an externally screwthreaded sleeve 29 surrounding a reduced portion of the spindle and engaging an internally screwthreaded boss 30 in the frame, the sleeve being rotatable by a handle 31 and locked in its adjusted position by a nut 32. The knives 44, 46 of each unit are adjustable angularly relative to the knives 43, 45 by adjusting the spindle 19 axially. The mechanism for feeding the cardboard blanks is controlled by means of a cam 14, Fig. 1, and the feed mechanism is adjustable relative to all the knives by adjusting the spindle 18 axially. The slotting units are carried by sub-frames 9, 10 slidably mounted on shafts 7, 8 carried by the frame 6. The sub-frames engage a screw spindle 11 having right-hand and left-hand screw threads so that when the spindle is rotated by a handle 12, the slotting units are moved towards or away from each other.
