In a cigarette rod cutting device of the kind described in the parent Specification the cutter shaft is adapted to be adjusted in pivotal manner in a plane parallel to the rod and inclined to the horizontal plane through the rod, and the oscillatory motion of the cutter about a radial axis directed towards the cutting edge is obtained by means of a cage member associated with an idler shaft which is pivotally adjustable consequentially upon pivotal adjustment of the cutter shaft, in a plane substantially parallel to the rod. As shown in Fig. 3 the cutter shaft 2 and the idler shaft 57 are connected obliquely by a Cardan joint, the position of the shaft 57 relatively to the shaft 2 regulating the oscillation of the cutting blade 34. A fork 54 (Fig. 8) is mounted at the end of the shaft 57. A pivot pin is mounted in the shaft 57 which is provided with an operating button 72 at one end and a pawl 82 at the other, the pivot pin being spring urged in the direction of the button 72. Operation of the button 72 causes the pawl 82 to rotate the shaft 87 which is geared to a worm 100 for advancing the blade 34 outwardly as it is worn. The shaft 87 is mounted in a tubular shaft 88 which extends through bores 93 in a cage 30 (Fig. 6). The ends 89 of the fork 54 are each provided with a bearing which supports pivot pins which extend into bores 55 of the cage 30. The shaft 88 is mounted in bearings 108, 109 of a cutter support 104. The shaft 2 engages a conical bore 111 in the support 104 and is rotatably supported in a gear-box 1 (Fig. 8). A drive shaft 113 drives the shaft 2 through the gearing in the box 1. A flange 114 is arranged on the gear box 1 inclined with respect to a horizontal plane. The flange 114 is provided with a graduation 115 for permitting adjustment of the box 1 and shaft 2 around the axis of the shaft 113 according to the desired length of cigarettes to be cut, which is dependent on the angular setting of the blade 34. Rotation of the flange 114 with respect to the housing is permitted by curved slots 116. During adjustment the clamping screws for the bearings 58 of the shaft 57 must be loosened. The bearing 58 is mounted on a block 117, the clamping face 118 of which lies in a plane substantially parallel to the cigarette rod and approximately in the same plane as the face 119 of the flange 114. Slots 120 in the block 117 permit the necessary adjustment.
