Abstract
921,405. Microtomes. D. DANON. July 3, 1961, No. 24009/61. Class 97 (1). A microtome comprises a system of two levers, one of which is adapted to be raised at an end remote from its pivotal axis in units of 1 micron by means of a gear system including a micrometric screw, the second lever being adapted to be raised about its fulcrum by the first lever through the intermediary of a pin arranged at a distance from its fulcrum and directly engaging the first lever, the second lever carrying a rotatable drum near said fulcrum, on which drum the specimen is mounted, the rotation of the drum being adapted to move the specimen past a cutting knife and to actuate the gear system for raising said first lever, whereby the specimen is advanced toward the knife. As shown, a specimen is mounted in a holder 34 on a rotatable drum 33, the shaft of which is provided with a handle (c.f. Figs. 2 and 3, not shown) for rotating the specimen past a fixed cutting knife 40 mounted on a known adjustable tool post 41. The drum is mounted on a lever 22 pivoted about bearings 25, 26. Mechanism for raising the lever 22 stepwise about its bearings so as to move the drum bodily towards the knife 40 comprises a member 10 eccentrically mounted on the shaft of the drum 33 and having two arms 10a, 10b engaging over a normally fixed pin 39<SP>1</SP>, the arrangement being such that for each rotation of the drum a ratchet wheel 9 on a shaft 6 is advanced by arm 10a by one tooth. This rotation is transmitted through a worm gearing 11, 12 and a micrometrically screw-threaded shaft 13 carrying the wheel 12 to an axially slidable but rotatably fixed bracket 17, this bracket being raised by 1 micron for each advance of the ratchet wheel. Axial movement of the bracket 17 causes pivotal movement of a lever 19 about its bearings 20, 21 and by way of a pin 29 adjustably positioned in a slot 28 in the lever 22, the raising of this lever about its bearings is obtained. The ball bearings 18, 20, 21, 25 and 26 have accurately located in conical or U-slots (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown). The lever 19 is of glass or metal covered with glass. Reference is also made to arrangement in which pin 39<SP>1</SP> lies against the outside of arm 10a.
