Abstract
556,034. Sextants. SHACKMAN, A., and SHACKMAN, R. C. July 2, 1942, No. 9168. [Class 97 (ii)] A sextant comprises an arc 1 having worm threads on its periphery, an index arm 7, a housing 5 pivotally supported on the index arm, a shaft 19 extending into the housing, a micrometer drum 17 mounted on the shaft exteriorly of the housing, a worm 4 of a diameter approximating to the diameter of the micrometer drum, a spring 12 normally urging the housing towards the arc to engage the worm, and means (a thumb piece 15) for pivotally moving the housing against the action of the spring to disengage the worm and permit coarse adjustment. The worm 4 is rotated by a knurled member 18. The worm spindle 19 is maintained in true axial alignment by a conical collar 20 pressed against a conical seating by spring-loaded pivots 23.
