[Class 106 (ii)] A screw gauge comprises a body portion with an axial aperture and radially displaceable elements mounted in the body portion and adapted to be moved into the aperture against .the action of springs, one set of elements constituting a " go " gauge and the other a " not go " gauge. In Fig. 1, a ring 1 is provided with " go " elements 12, 13 and " not go " elements 14, 15 located in radial slots 2. Peripheral grooves 8 are provided for receiving heads 16 attached to the gauging elements. Movement of the elements to the gauging position is effected manually by pressing opposed heads 16 inwards against the action of springs 23 until balls 30 located in the heads abut face cam washers 28 adjustably secured to the body by screws 27. Sighting apertures 31 in the cover-plate enable the contact points of balls and washers to be viewed. A cover-plate, Fig. 4, with a chamfered aperture 20, is secured to the body by screws, and carries pins 21 adapted to abut edges of the gauging elements to limit their outward movements. In a modification, the gauging members are controlled by a cam ring with " go," " not go," and " neutral " positions. The cam ring surrounds the ring 1 and co-operates internally with balls on the exterior of the heads 16. For checking small screws, the elements 12 are tapered and provided with threads of external form for making line contact with the work-piece. Three or more such elements are required per set. A mounting in which elements 12 may be threaded is described.
