Abstract

920,540. Micrometer gauges. J. W. RHODES. June 15, 1960 [Nov. 10, 1959], No. 37994/59. Class 106 (2). A micrometer for measuring internal dimensions comprises a barrel A with a fixed base C having a hole in which a rear spindle D is slidably but non-rotatably supported. A front spindle E screws on to rear spindle D and is locked to a micrometer thimble B. Each spindle has a tapered portion having equal but opposite tapers on which four pairs of balls or cones, separated by spring connections F, bear. Connecting-rods H are fixed on to these balls and on to measuring balls G. Various shaped styli may be substituted for balls G to measure internal threads and other dimensions. As the micrometer thimble is screwed down the tapers move and the balls G are forced outwards a distance depending on the angle of taper and distance moved by the micrometer thimble.
