Cutting tobacco. - Tobacco fed through a mouthpiece 11 by converging belts 8, 9, is cut or shredded bv the cutter 12 carried in a holder 42 secured to a bar 41 coupling two rotating cranked axles 25, 31. The knife is clamped in its holder by screws 48, 49 passing through the bar 41. Lugs 43, 44 at the ends of the holder connect it to the bar 41, the ears 44 being attached by a pivot pin 45 while a pin 46 through the bar 41 loosely engages in slots 47 in the ears 43. The holder 42 with the knife may be adjusted at different angles to the coupling bar by screws 50 engaging in threaded holes in the ears and bearing at their ends against the pin 46. The cranked shafts, which may be provided with counterbalance weights 57, are carried :n brackets depending from a frame 14 extending transversely of the main frame 1. The shafts are driven through bevel gears 37, 39, from a transverse shaft 22 actuated through bevel gear from a power shaft 21. The frame 14 may be so mounted that it can be moved around the axis of the shaft 21 as centre, thus setting the coupling rod 41 out of square with the main frame 1. The knife 12 is then adjusted by the screws 50 so that it is square with the main frame. Under these circumstances the edge of the knife traces on a transverse plane an ellipse as shown in Fig. 4, thus permitting a free feeding movement of the material to be cut. The front 56 of the mouthpiece is preferably shaped to correspond to this movement. In the Provisional Specification it is stated that two blades may be fitted in the knife-carrier, one cutting in each direction of movement.
