Abstract

643,491. Rotary cutting-machines. BATTERSBY, J. E., and MASSON SCOTT & CO., Ltd. Aug. 18, 1947, No. 22849. [Class 31 (i)] In a rotary cutting-machine of the kind in which a paper or like web is cut into sheets by a rotary knife co-operating with a fixed blade 2, the rotary knife being spirally mounted so that the web is progressively severed across its width, the cutting means are adjustably mounted to vary the inclination of the cutter with respect to the web path and the axis of adjustment is disposed to one side of the rotary knife axis and in or near a plane passing through the line of the progressive cut, the rotary knife being driven by pulley and belt or rope means with the pulley centres in or near the axis of adjustment. The rotary knife is carried by a rotary drum 1 mounted on a shaft 8 running in end bearings 3 and driven through a coupling 10 and worm gear 15 the driving shaft 11 of which is horizontal and at right angles to the shaft 8. Shaft 11 carries a pulley 12 having a multi-vee-groove and connected to a similar lower pulley by vee-section belts. To vary the speed of the rotary knife, the lower pulley may be driven through an infinitely variable gear or the vee-pulleys themselves may be variable as to diameter. The bearings 3, the fixed knife 2, and the drum 1 and its driving mechanism are carried by a frame 4 having a bracket 6 pivoted on a pin 7, this pin being carried in a bracket bolted to the main framework 5.
