Abstract
316,535. United Cigarette Machine Co., Akt.-Ges. July 30, 1928, [Convention date]. Cutting and sliding vegetables &c.-A tobacco cutter, of the type in which a circular cutter is mounted on a swinging arm, is provided with a device so that the cutter which swings up to and just across the cutting area in close contact therewith, is then withdrawn axially from the cutting area and remains withdrawn during the swing back to its initial position, thus enabling the tobacco to be led forward without hindrance notwithstanding the small amplitude of the swing. A circular cutter 28, mounted on a shaft 26, is driven from the main driving shaft 3 by a system of bevel wheels and a pinion 27 on the shaft 26 which meshes with an annular bevel wheel 24<1>. The connecting wheels and shafts are enclosed in the swinging member 9 which is operated from the main driving shaft by a connecting rod 43. The withdrawal of the cutting blade from the cutting area is effected by a lever 34, pivoted in a bearing 36 and attached to the shaft 26 at 37, which carries a roller 35 held against a cam 30 by a spring 35<1>. While the roller runs on the lower part of the cam the blade is kept pressed against the cutting area, but when running on the raised part the motion of the lever 34 against the spring 39 pulls back the blade. The spring 39 is adjustable by turning a screw head 40. The swinging member is made in two parts slidably connected so that the distance between the axis of swing and the axis of rotation of the cutter can be increased to compensate for wear of the cutter and the bearing 36 in which the lever 34 is pivoted can be moved longitudinally by a screw 41. A grinding roller 53 is arranged so that at the end of the swing away from the cutting area the cutting blade impinges on it and is sharpened. The cutter head is preferably so fixed to the swinging arm that it can easily be removed to enable the cutter to be changed in case of damage by a foreign body.
