[Class 5 (i)] The clearing members for each cutter of a tobacco cutting machine of the kind comprising co-operating cutters in the form of intermeshing, rotary discs, are relatively staggered so that the cutting discs will be able to yield laterally to each clearing member with which they contact. Tobacco is fed along a shoot 6 to intermeshing, rotary cutter discs 3 provided with clearing members 26 in the form of pointed plates, as shown in Fig. 5. The members 26, separated by spacers 35, Fig. 6, are mounted on bars 33, 34 by means of recesses 30, 29 in the members, corresponding recesses also being provided in the spacers. The bars 34 are detachably mounted in the machine frame and the bars 33 are mounted in trunnions so that the members 26 may be turned from their operative position into engagement with grinding rollers 36 for sharpening recesses 28 in the members 26. The clearing members for each cutter are divided into two groups arranged to operate in relatively staggered positions successive members belonging to different groups. In a modification, Fig. 3, the clearing members are in the form of discs 21 mounted on rotary shafts 23, the cutters are mounted in a hopper 2 connected to a delivery conduit 13 and additional loosely mounted spacing discs 25 are provided.
