Abstract

353,190. Cutting tobacco. LEGG, 0., 31, Eyre Street Hill, Clerkenwell, London. June 18, 1930, No. 18599. [Class 5 (i).] A machine for cutting tobacco comprising a rotating drum on to which the tobacco is fed and a transverse blade co-operating with the periphery of the drum or with an adjacent cutting strip to shred the leaf, is provided with means for cutting the tobacco into suitable lengths after shredding. Tobacco fed to the drum 1 is shredded by the reciprocating knife blade 2 whence it passes to a set of discs 5 loosely mounted on and adjustably secured to a shaft 3 driven by means of a sprocket wheel thereon, the discs being spaced apart by distance-pieces. In a modification, Fig. 3, sets of intercalated rollers 10 are mounted on shafts 9 journalled in a chute 8 with scraping edge 12, or interengaging discs may be secured to the shafts 9, one shaft being driven and imparting drive to the other by means of friction rollers. In a further modification, a cutting strip in the form of a ledger extending from the periphery of the drum, coacting with a transverse knife, as described in Specification 286,421, [Class 5 (i), Farmyard &c. appliances], is arranged with the knife over the shoot 8. A receiving hopper or conveyer may be provided.
